Pandit Ram Mate
Pt. Ram Mate is a Hindustani Classical Music guru and the Director of
Swarasadhana Sangeet Kala Kendra, Pune. He learnt from Pt. Vitthalrao Ghate, himself
a disciple of Pt. Vinayakabuwa Patwardhan, a prominent exponent the Gwalior
style and tradition.
Pt. Ram Mate completed his formal education with a Diploma in the Mechanical stream.
He gained the degree of 'Masters in Music' in the year 1956, and fondly remembers the
late Pt. D. V. Paluskar as being his examiner for the same. Since then, hundreds of
students of varying musical abilities have learnt music from him.
Through the years, Pt. Ram Mate has organized numerous music programmes via
the music school that have had the privilege of presence, blessings as well as musical contribution
of most emminent personalities of Indian Classical Music. He has also composed and directed music for many
programmes on All India Radio, Pune.
He has been felicitated for his musical acumen by the
Gaandharva Mahavidyalaya,
and the
Sawai Gandharva Music Festival
in 2010.
As he turns 81, and the music school turns 50, I present a brief introduction to my gurujee
in this essay written in Marathi.
May this inspire you to do more riyaaz. Happy reading.

In November 2010, Panditjee's students organized a programme for vocal recital by his senior diciples.
Panditjee was felicitated by Dr. Shankar Abhyankar, himself a keen philosopher-musician. I present a short
recollection of the fragrant evening, in Marathi, below. I hope you like it.
